Blue flag beaches in Cascais

Published on

Last year Cascais Town Hall was prohibited from applying for the Blue Flag award last year. This year they plan to put forth 11 of their beaches.

Due to protests against the assessment process in 2010, they refused to participate. This means they will be heavily scrutinised for the quality-indicating symbol. The Mayor of Cascais; Carlos Carreiras, is announcing that twelve different beaches will be entered.

This is the most candidates the area has had over the years. In fact, Carreiras only recalls as many as six back in 2006 and again in 2009.

Some of the beaches have been here before, but four new entries will be present this year. Here is a list of the beaches that will be participating.

  • Guincho
  • Crismina
  • Moitas
  • Tamariz
  • Poca
  • São Pedro do Estoril
  • Parede
  • Carcavelos
  • Rainha
  • Duquesa
  • Avencas

The latter four will be first-time entrants. In order to achieve the Blue Flag award, there are 800 different tests that are conducted. The final results showed that each one of them were of "excellent quality."

Thanks to a substantial investment from Town Hall, each area was cleaned, and the Vinhas, Bicesse were reconstructed and regulated, as well as the Caparide and Marianas streams. Mayor Carreiras played a major role by providing opinions that helped the area get good results.

Since the negative economic cycle needs to be reversed, the beach season is going to open up early. When May 1, 2011 rolls around it will provide increased employment, and improve the quality of the services by the beach concessionaries. This will keep the region more competitive.
