Introduction

Visit a European city and benefit from one of several cultural events at the same time. In Guimaraes, you will be swept up by the energy and excitement of the citizens as they prepare for the cultural events taking place in 2012. Artists, musicians, orchestras, authors and architects will be coming to Guimaraes to contribute to the Capital of Culture. It is your chance to witness all of the creations to be unveiled throughout the year.

Photography

Guimaraes, located in Portugal, will be the center of culture in Europe throughout 2012. Citizens of Guimaraes, as well as visitors, will have the opportunity to view an artistic photographic exhibit, called an “art platform.” Exhibits will include “Laboratorios Criativos,” Ateliers Emergentes de Apoio a Criatividade” and “Centro de Arte.” The project will promote a multifunctional space and provide both cultural and socio-economic benefits to Guimaraes.

Street Art

Guimaraes’ Year of Culture in 2012 includes street art created by street artists from all over Europe. These artists will create innovative artistic vistas for you to experience and enjoy, giving you an unforgettable experience. Some of the street art will include dance troupes and gigantic paintings on the walls of buildings within the city. This huge cultural event will draw tens of thousands of tourists to see and experience the exciting scenes and artistic creations.

Dance

UNESCO has included Guimaraes’ historic city centre in its List of World Heritage, and this means the city’s architectural achievements cannot be overlooked. This recognition means that the city will be, in all of 2012, the point from which innovation will originate.

The Espectaculo Metamorfoses highlights the O Centro para os Assuntos da Arte e Arquitectura, a dance performance. Under the direction of Marta Freitas, Espectaculo joins the performing arts and the sound, voice, imagination and movement. Guimaraes will be presenting this dance troupe especially in recognition of Guimaraes as the 2012 Cultural Capital of Europe.

Music

The planners of Guimaraes’ cultural year have not forgotten about music. From orchestra, symphony orchestra and music that represents the culture of Portugal, it will all be presented to eager, music-loving audiences. The concerts being planned and presented will showcase the best of what Portugal and Guimaraes have to offer to you and thousands of other travelers planning to participate in the year-long cultural festival.

The city has booked several concerts with the Expensive Soul Symphonic Experience, blending orchestra and the music representative of this country. Some of these concerts will allow the Expensive Soul Symphony to perform together with Nicolinos – an experience to look forward to experiencing. One musical performance will include Camane, Alexandre Frazao, the Royal Orchestra, Viboras do Chiado and the Dead Combo, all in one concert.

Cinema

As the promoter of the cultural life of Europe, Guimaraes will also present several opportunities for film-goers to experience the best of European cinema. New films from Europe and several other countries will be presented and viewed throughout all of 2012. One of these cinematic events will be the Festa do Cinema Italiano, presenting “Il Mio Domani," featuring Maria Spada.

Theater

Guimaraes, in celebrating its distinction as the cultural capital of Europe in 2012, will be including theatrical performances in its creative offerings for citizens and residents to participate in. The theatrical scene will include theatrical presentations representative of the region as well as theatrical presentations from around Europe.

As you anticipate visiting Guimaraes, expect anything to happen, from traditional theater to street theater. The city’s leaders are thinking of everything they can present for theater-goers to watch, participate in and remember.
