Grand Opening of the New Airport Metro Station

Lisbon Metro Portugal

Published on

The much anticipated opening of a 2.05 mile section of the Lisbon Metro has finally occurred. This new section runs from the Oriente Station all the way to the Portela Airport. There were several delays that interfered with the original opening date and after having the opening pushed back several times; it is now open for business. “The delays were necessary to train new staff, finalize tests and finish construction.” in a statement that was released from the Metro. This is very great news for the 400,000 passengers who are expected to use the new section of the Lisbon Metro each month.

Since there is such a high volume of commuters who will be utilizing this new line of service, it is easy to see that there is a significant need for it. With that in mind, the new line was made by extending the Red Line’s underground passages by allowing them to connect to several new stations in Encarnação and Moscavide. The extension terminates at the Airport stop and the average time for commute is estimated to be a little over 5 minutes.

This is much needed travel relief for those who live and work in the area as well as for those who travel by air; according to the construction company responsible for the new 3.3 kilometer stretch. This will greatly improve commute times and make it much more convenient for commuters to travel back and forth between Saldanha and Portela in just under 20 minutes.

According to the officials at the Metropolitano de Lisboa, there are three new station that will work together to help reduce the amount of CO2 emissions by at least 5,000 tones. This is a significant decrease in the amount of CO2 pollution, considering the amount of cars trips that can be avoided.

For the residents of the Encarnação/Olivais and Moscavide neighborhoods where the average commute is greatly affected by the high density of people that live in the area, this major improvement in the New Airport Metro Station is has been long overdue. Moscavide, Encarnação and Olivais are considered to be among the most heavily populated areas in the capital, since it houses more that 7% percent of the city’s population.

For those who are not familiar with the plight of travelers when they commute to Moscavide, Encarnação and Olivais in Lisbon, before the expansion of the New Metro Airport, commute times were deplorable. A large majority of time was spent travelling to and from work. Now that there has been some changes made to help reduce the amount of congestion and time needed to get from the airport to the city; those who live in the area can become more productive and feel less stress while they are travelling. This will also improve overall passenger safety and reduce the amount of travel incidents in the area.

Thanks to the innovative expansion of the Metro Lisbon, those who need to travel between the Portela Airport and the Oriente Station will be able to get around in a much shorter time.
