Studies show that passenger numbers rose by 3.6 percent in the last month, compared to October of 2010. The numbers have increased 7.8 percent since the beginning of 2011, according to airport management firm ANA.

2.5 million airport passengers went through Portuguese airports in the month of October. This is a 3.6 increase from the numbers that were charted in October of 2010.

ANA says that this increase is in part due to the low cost of their airline Ryanair. Also, growth that is being experienced in airline travel isn't being noted at all of the airports. While many of airports around Portugal are seeing increases, the Azores actually saw a decrease of 5.2 percent.

Since the beginning of 2011, numbers at the airports have increased to 7.8 percent, which equates to 22.6 million passengers. The highest numbers came from Oporto, which grew by 16.5 percent. Faro grew by 6.1 percent. Lisbon grew by 5.8 percent, and the Azores only grew by 1.8 percent.

These markets grew thanks in large part to the UK, France, and Spain's tourist markets.

A company statement said, quote: “TAP Portugal (37.2 percent), Ryanair (14 percent), EasyJet (12.4 percent) and group SATA (6.2 percent) represent 69.8 percent of traffic at ANA airports.”
