Traffic On A22 Motorway Down By Half, Officials Report

It may be obvious to anyone who has driven the A22 recently, but traffic on the newly tolled motorway is down by nearly one half, according to official figures from Estradas de Portugal. The A22 or Via do Infante, which travels the entire length of the Algarve region was reported to have a 4 was reported to have a 48% reduction in traffic as of December compared to the previous year.

Estradas de Portugal claims that the decrease is not due to the new tolls alone, citing the current economic downturn; they note that it was not until 8 December that the tolls were put into place.

The trend is expected to increase in the summer, with a further decline in traffic on the A22 predicted. As of the first of July, Algarve residents will no longer receive the ten toll-free trips month on the A22 which they are currently entitled to; they will also cease to receive the 15% discount on tolls for the remainder of the month at that time.
