LOCATION:

Rua do Lazareto is a street in Funchal, located close to the Barreirinha area. It's a historically significant part of the city, especially known for its proximity to the Lazaretto (a former quarantine station) that was established to protect Funchal from infectious diseases in the past, particularly during the 18th and 19th centuries. The Lazaretto's main purpose was to isolate ships arriving at the port that might have carried contagious diseases.

The Rua do Lazareto itself is a charming, somewhat narrow street that meanders through a part of Funchal that retains much of its historical character. It's a residential area, but visitors often pass through on their way to nearby attractions like Barreirinha Beach, the Funchal Marina, or other parts of the old town (Zona Velha).

This street provides a taste of local life and is located near several interesting spots:

  1. Barreirinha Beach – A small, beautiful pebble beach popular for a swim.
  2. Funchal's Old Town (Zona Velha) – This historic area is filled with colorful buildings, cobbled streets, and a variety of local restaurants and bars.
  3. Lazaretto Building – While not a major tourist attraction, the site of the old lazaretto (quarantine station) offers a glimpse into the history of Madeira's efforts to manage disease during the age of exploration.

In general, the Rua do Lazareto area is perfect for a quiet walk, offering a mix of historical charm and beautiful views of the ocean.
