Tour the Alfama District of Lisbon
Alfama is a very historic place in Lisbon. Unlike the bigger cities in this area, Alfama is actually very laid back and life here moves a little slower than you might expect. The landscape is filled with treasures of both natural and architectural roots. You will find an array of great attractions and plenty of things to keep you busy when you visit this lovely district in Lisbon.
The District’s Past
With its history going back to the 12th century, this district offers a look way back into the past. There are many things here that tell about the Roman and the Arab history of this area. In 1755, this area suffered from a very severe earthquake. Fortunately, this district was spared major damage because of its dense bedrock foundation and many of the historical buildings still stand.
A Walk Down the Street
As you travel through Alfama you will follow along the Tagus River than runs alongside the district. The streets are lined with grocers and workshops that are a throwback to history. You can travel through the curves of the medieval alley ways and take in some amazing views from higher up in the city. Be sure to capture a stunning view of the districts most popular attraction, the 6th century St. George’s Castle. The only real way to take in everything Alfama offers is by foot. Do not get too caught up in hurrying along, as many travelers tend to do. Take your time to really take in this charming piece of Lisbon history.
Be sure to also take time from sight seeing to do a little shopping. Shopping here turns up some wonderful souvenirs. There is also some more modern shops and excellent restaurants. Do be aware that the restaurants are very traditional in nature. They have few tables and an intimate environment, but if you end up having to wait on a table, be assured that the food is well worth it.
You will see many of the older residents are living in the older buildings and the wealthier newcomers to the area inhabit larger, more modern homes. Many of the buildings below St. George’ s Castle have been converted into hotels that are very unique and interesting. If you have a chance, consider spending at least one night in one of these hotels.
