For the 7th year in a row, Portugal has won the “World’s #1 Overseas Retirement Haven” award according to a study of nearly 300,000 Live And Invest Overseas readers.
Portugal is cherished for various reasons; it provides a high quality of life together with a low cost of living when compared to other European nations. Its warm climate and stunning landscapes create an ideal setting for retirement or beginning anew, while the Portuguese people are recognised for their friendliness and hospitality, making fitting in easy. Additionally, the combination of a low crime rate, political stability, and an inviting culture draws substantial foreign investment.
Portugal consistently ranks among the world’s most peaceful and safe countries, currently sitting in 7th position on the Global Peace Index. The nation features a well-regarded healthcare system, ranking 12th globally. Its education system is strong, with many citizens proficient in English. In popular ex-pat areas, numerous healthcare providers communicate in English, and the National Health Service (SNS) is accessible to all residents with private healthcare options available.
One of the major draws of Portugal is its wonderful weather - the country offers a fantastic climate, making it one of the best places to live in Europe.
The cost-of-living index consistently shows that Portugal is a relatively inexpensive country to reside in. Your purchasing power will go a long way here; however, if you are considering working, it is important to note that the minimum wage is low compared to other EU countries. From January 2025, it is €870 per month.
Post-Brexit, non-EU citizens can enter and reside in Portugal for 90 days within a 180-day period. If you wish to stay longer, you will need to obtain a residence permit.
Portugal offers a range of residency options allowing you to relocate. The most popular is probably the D7 visa, aimed at those with a passive income such as a pension or income say from a rental property. But you could also start a business here via the D2 visa, take up a job via the D1 or D3 visas, or support yourself with a salary from a remote job via the D8 Digital Nomad visa.
With its stunning landscapes, delicious cuisine, and laid-back lifestyle, Portugal truly has something for everyone.
