Figures just released from the National Statistics Institute (INE) indicate that Portugal's tourism sector experienced an exceptional year in 2024, welcoming a record number of 30 million visitors which in turn, generated 27 billion euros worth of revenue.

In terms of tourists holidaying in Portugal, the British market still holds the largest share, accounting for 19.9% of all non-resident overnight stays in October.

Overnight stays from the German market, the second main source market, were 12.6% of the total, an increase of 3.7%, followed in third place by the American market with a growth of 7.3%.

Evaluating the top 10 source markets, the Polish market recorded the highest growth of 21.8%, followed by the Canadian market with 15.0%. However, the Spanish market recorded the most significant drop at 12.4%, trailed by the French at 3.9% and the Brazilian market at 3.4%.

The figures are only currently available up to the end of October, however, when the final figures are released, estimates indicate that 2024 may be a landmark year for Portugal's tourism sector.

Forecasted growth attributes up to 20% of the national economy to tourism.

Portugal’s tourism industry is experiencing remarkable expansion. The allure of mainland Portugal, along with the autonomous islands of Madeira and the Azores, is evident in the record number of tourists and overnight stays in 2024.
