26th February – 09th March – Madeira Carnival – Funchal
Madeira’s Carnival is one of the liveliest festivals! Funchal City wakes up to the sound of brass bands and carnival parades bringing their good humour to the whole of the downtown area, which is then continued at night with concerts and shows for five consecutive days. There are processions, floats, singing and dancing - the whole island is caught up in the intense and contagious liveliness.

28th February – 5th March – Torres Vedras Carnival
Colour and joy are the themes here! This is one of the most popular Carnivals in the country.
One of the highlights is the parade of floats, men dressed up as women and giant puppets. The interaction between the public and the masked people is largely done by throwing "cocotes" (small objects made of paper and sawdust and rubber leftovers) between them.

The most famous procession with political and social satire enjoys floats, samba schools, "gigantones" and "cabeçudos". There are thousands of people who come to watch it, and the animation is spread throughout the city. The programme is extensive and entertaining, and you are encouraged to get involved!

The Algarve Challenge is a race involving the elite of the mountain bike world, but it is also open to ambitious amateur cyclists. It is the most important mountain bike event staged in Portugal.
All stages of the race begin/end in historical Tavira, but all routes will be different. Participants race in teams of two, testing the team spirit, crossing hills and valleys and going through streams, on the best tracks along the coast. The real challenge is not only to win but to share the true spirit of the mountain biker.
