United Airlines has announced eight new destinations for next year, and Funchal in Madeira is one of them. Flights between Newark (New Jersey) will begin on June 7th 2025 and will run three times per week.
These new schedules are set to reshape how tourists and business travellers access Madeira Island.
The Funchal/Newark flight will connect the region to 89 airports in the USA, Canada and Mexico, on flights operated by United or partners. United's service from Madeira to New York/Newark will be operated with a Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft.
The carrier, which operates on several continents, announced the new routes in a clear bid to expand the company. By 2025, United Airlines will also be flying to Bilbao (Spain), Dakar (Senegal), Kaohsiung (Taiwan), Nuuk (Greenland), Palermo (Italy), Ulaanbaatar (Mongolia) and from May 16th 2025, Faro in the Algarve.
Marcel Fuchs, General Manager of International Sales for United Airlines, said: "We are thrilled to announce our first-ever nonstop service between Madeira and New York/Newark, further expanding our route network from Portugal to the US. For the summer of 2025, our customers in Portugal will benefit from an even greater choice of journeys, with the opportunity of a direct service linking Madeira to the United States, as well as the possibility of enjoying convenient connections via our New York/Newark hub to 57 destinations across America."
In addition to the new future seasonal service from Madeira and Faro, United offers daily flights all year round from Lisbon to New York/Newark, almost daily service all year round from Lisbon to Washington D.C., daily seasonal services from Porto and Ponta Delgada, Azores, to New York/Newark. Many of the new flights will be available for sale on United.com and the United app in the coming weeks.
With Condé Nast Traveller 2024 Readers’ Choice Awards ranking Madeira as the Best Island in Europe, these new flights will ensure that Madeira remains accessible to North American travellers and continues to thrive as a global destination.
