New sports academy

Businessman Pedro Frazão, owner of Premier Sports, announced a new project to renovate the Vilamoura Tennis and Padel Academy. Completion is due in 2028 and will include accommodation for athletes and coaches, a restaurant, padel and tennis courts, a swimming pool, gyms and medical and physiotherapy treatment rooms.

"This is a complete overhaul of our venue in three phases," explained Pedro Frazão, who in recent years has become one of the leading Portuguese padel players in his age group.

"The first phase has already begun and involves the infrastructure such as river water and sewage. Then we'll move on to the electricity grid, the new car park, new pavements and there will be a new road behind the club. The second phase is called Clubside Village and consists of 14 luxury villas for sale. The third phase will involve a new clubhouse, creating accommodation in the gym, with construction scheduled for 2027 and 2028. The location will be the same as the current clubhouse and will include a reception, a sports shop, a restaurant, three gyms and treatment/physiotherapy rooms. On the first floor there will be ten T-2 apartments and a swimming pool," he said. It will then be possible to "permanently house 40 athletes. We'll be able to have tennis and padel players staying all year round, as well as groups for training, in addition to 'tennis and padel holidays'. At that point, we'll need to reinforce the coaching staff in both disciplines, so that they can accompany high-performance athletes because we're betting on a new sporting dimension."

Vasco Costa, president of the Portuguese Tennis Federation and member of the ITF World Tennis Tour Committee, said: "I congratulate Pedro Frazão on his courage and determination because it would be easier to stay at home on the sofa than to make an investment of this nature. It's an unprecedented project, there's no academy in Portugal with all these integrated facilities, and I hope that even more talented Portuguese tennis players will be 'manufactured' here because we'll have the conditions for that to happen. Conditions designed not only for Portuguese players but also for international tennis and padel players. It's a project that will take tennis and padel to the next level". Finally, the project's architect, Marco Sousa, who also plays tennis and padel, explained that "one of the most important points was the idea of sustainability, with the renovation and enhancement of existing green spaces. In terms of materials, the idea of unity prevailed. Both the residences and the clubhouse have a single image that integrates tennis and padel as a whole. We looked for natural materials such as stone, wood and, in very specific cases, metals."
