September events in Portugal
Published on
It is the end of the peak holiday season and now is the perfect time to visit Portugal! The weather is a little cooler and there are some fantastic events to see - these are our favourite five:
3rd – 8th September - Bodyboard Pro Fest – Sintra
Appreciate the skill and expertise of the world’s top bodyboarders, taking part in the Sintra Portugal Pro at Praia Grande.
Organised under the auspices of the International Bodyboarding Association (IBA), the Sintra Portugal Pro tournament consists of both men’s and women’s events and is the only stage in the World Bodyboarding Championship to be held in Europe.
Contained within the protected area of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, Praia Grande is considered a major international bodyboarding event because of the quality of its waves, allowing competitors to perform some truly spectacular manoeuvres.
4th – 9th September - Feiras Novas de Ponte de Lima - Viana do Castelo
The famous Feiras Novas de Ponte de Lima are celebrated in honour of Nossa Senhora das Dores and are officially classified as National Intangible Cultural Heritage.
About 1 hour from Porto, the event is already a national reference, attracting thousands. It is a festival of the people, with a lot of joy and spontaneity. During the day, folklore takes over the village, with the pilgrimage considered to be the ‘largest live congress of popular culture in Portugal’. Take the opportunity to get to know the oldest village in Portugal.
5th – 7th September – Festival F – Faro
Don't miss the final two-day summer festival in Faro's historic centre. Festival F takes place in the so-called “vila adentro” (village within) the historic area of Faro through which, over the centuries, the Phoenicians, Romans, Visigoths and Moors have all passed. It still retains a very particular charm and boasts a huge architectural, religious, natural and cultural heritage.
With a strong focus on Portuguese music, and shows on several stages throughout the city, this cultural and artistic event embraces cinema, stand-up comedy, musical and political gatherings, fine arts, literature, crafts, street entertainment and street food.
20th – 22nd September – Chefs on Fire – Estoril
Chefs on Fire is the jewel in the crown of Portugal’s food festivals. Nestled in the beautiful resort of Estoril, approximately 30 minutes west of Lisbon, this unmissable event positions itself as one of the most sustainable festivals in Portugal.
Set in a beautiful park, beneath towering pine trees, some of Portugal’s most highly regarded and Michelin-starred chefs cook up a feast using only fire, smoke and firewood - around a 90m2 fire pit. Each day the chefs and food change, along with a line-up of great bands and musicians.
23rd – 28th September - Rally de Portugal Histórico - Lisbon
The 18th edition of the Rally de Portugal Histórico is considered one of the most important European Historic Regularity events.
In last year's edition, the ACP Motorsport event once again tested the endurance of machines and drivers, with 81 teams tackling a course over 2,000 kilometres long, starting and finishing in Lisbon. Don’t miss the parade of these iconic machines.
