Water saving initiative in the Algarve
Published on
Globally, we use more water than we need, so now it is more important than ever to spread the message about saving water.
In a joint initiative, Turismo de Portugal and Turismo do Algarve are calling on tourists to raise awareness of the importance of adopting good practices in water usage during their holidays in the Algarve, promoting more sustainable tourism.
The idea is to encourage visitors to take an active role in conserving this essential resource, promoting behaviours with positive long-term impacts.
Visit Portugal has come up with an innovative initiative: six transparent suitcases, each one filled with seawater. Together, they represent the amount of water each tourist can save daily – 235 litres. The water suitcases are left in the baggage reclaim area of Faro Airport, turning it into an awareness zone, and offering valuable water-saving tips.
Water is crucial for the existence of natural ecosystems, the continuation of communities, and the development of economic activities. Given its scarcity and the urgency of the situation, tourism can make a significant contribution and play a key role on the road to a sustainable future for the planet.
This message will reach the minds of over 40,000 people who arrive daily in the Algarve, providing a powerful mindset for their holidays and a positive thought for their lives.
This initiative is another step in the ‘It's Futourism’ movement, launched by Visit Portugal in 2024, calling on the tourists of the future to travel sustainably, responsibly, and authentically, ensuring a legacy of well-being for future generations and the planet.
