A New Port Of Lisbon May Be Coming Soon

If the plan just announced comes to fruition, Lisbon could soon have a new port including a new marina and cruise terminal. The massive project is projected to cost somewhere in the neighborhood of 1 billion Euros, 80% of which will be funded by private investors. The new marina will be built between Alges and Belem, with containers being routed to Trafaria, on the southern banks of the Tagus. The new port and marina will permit Lisbon to host major international events such as the Volvo Ocean Race, which is slated to include the city in 2014-2015 and 2017-2018.

The updated riverfront infrastructure will allow Portuguese exports to be more competitive globally, with the port being as advanced as Barcelona’s, with the added advantage of its proximity to the Atlantic. The new cruise terminal, to be built in Santa Apolonia, will permit a higher volume of cruise ships to visit the city, which will be a boon to the Portuguese tourism industry.
