The Algarve Region has done it again! In the first-ever Travel Awards of Today’s Golfer, the spectacular region located on the southern edge of Portugal was named as Europe’s top golfing destination by claiming the title of Best Value Golf Destination for Continental Europe.

The award was handed by editors of the Today’s Golfer, the magazine that conducted the voting process among an international cohort of avid golfers. It is owned by the Bauer Consumer Media Limited, a registered company in England and Wales. It is also considered as one of the bestselling golf magazines in the United Kingdom.

The inaugural Today’s Golf Travel Awards was held in cooperation with the Your Golf Travel, a major travel golf operator in Europe. Golfers voted for their favorite destinations including golf courses, hotels and resorts both in the United Kingdom and in Europe.

How well did the Algarve perform? The region received an impressive 32% of the overall votes from the participating golf.

In contrast, Turkey was awarded second place with just 19% of the votes. Costa Brava and Costa del Sol came in third and fourth, respectively.

Such an impressive showing comes as little surprise considering that the Algarve Region has heavily invested in the creation of a world-class network of golf courses. The best include Quinta do lago North and South, Vale da Pinta, and Quinta do Vale, to name a few.

This network of first-rate network of golf courses is complemented by the mild Mediterranean climate, which makes it possible to enjoy a full round of golf almost any time of the year. Coupled with the delicious cuisine, the beautiful beaches, and the relatively low cost of living, the Algarve Region continues to attract more than its fair share of tourists including golfers from all over Europe and even the world.

The venues in the Algarve Region also reaped several other awards. The Best Courses award was given to Vilamoura’s Old Course while the Hotel/Resort categories were awarded to Dona Filipa & San Lorenzo and Le Meridien Penina.

Did you know, too, that any European Union citizen has the right to purchase property and take up residence in the Algarve sans the voluminous paperwork? This certainly explains the popularity of the region not only as a golfing destination but also as a retirement destination.

These are proof that, indeed, the tourism industry in this part of Portugal is living up to its brand. It should be noted that, in March 2007, Minister of Economy Manuel Pinho launched the “Allgarve” brand as part of the marketing strategy for the Algarve Region. The aim was to strengthen the region’s image as a premier tourist destination in Portugal for foreign citizens.

But why choose the Algarve Region for your next golfing adventure? For one thing, the mild Mediterranean climate means that while golfers in northern European countries are stuck indoors, golfers in the Algarve Region are still able to play full rounds of golf even during the winter season.

The peak golfing season is from late autumn to late spring. Warm, sunny days can be expected but bring an umbrella because rain is not uncommon either.

For another thing, the golf courses present a wide variety of challenges for every golfer. You will most likely find a golf course that excites your senses while challenging your swing in one of the over 35 options here. The trick is in trying every course but that should not be a problem either.

After getting your share of golf, you must explore the Algarve Region’s other attractions – its arts and culture, people and places, and extreme adventure and nightlife.
